Traffic Medicine Department

In the Traffic Medicine Department at Valais Hospital, we offer expert assessments for people whose ability to drive is in question. Our highly qualified level 4 SSML traffic physicians carry out assessments to identify any problems related to alcohol, drugs, medication or health problems that may affect driving ability.
These assessments are carried out at the request of the Swiss road traffic authorities. As well as carrying out assessments, our doctors also take part in accompanied check-ups and are available to answer questions from GPs about fitness to drive.
Our assessments are based on the legal foundations, as well as on the recommendations of the Swiss Society of Forensic Medicine and the guidelines of the various specialist medical societies.
The costs of the assessment are borne by the person being assessed. The traffic medicine medical report, in which our specialist doctors issue their recommendations regarding fitness to drive, is sent to the relevant cantonal motor vehicle office, which will then decide whether or not to admit the person to the road.
Rely on us to assess your fitness to drive with all our expertise and experience, and in so doing, contribute to road safety. If you have any questions, or if you are asked to undergo a traffic medicine assessment by the cantonal motor vehicle office, please contact our secretariat.
In connection with the driving licence and in accordance with the Ordinance governing admission to road traffic, we carry out the following medical checks:

  • Level 1
  • Level 2
  • Level 3
  • Level 4

Including checks for the elderly, professional drivers, in connection with applications for driving licences for students suffering from a pathology, etc.
